Unwind with a Luxurious Experience at Helen & Joey Estate

Some call it a land of enchantment; others simply call it one of the most beautiful spots in the region. Welcome to Helen & Joey Estate, located at 12-14 Spring Lane in Gruyere. This estate is a standout destination that combines an expressive, world-class wine range with a sense of whimsy and genuine hospitality.

Named after its founders, Helen and Joey, the property has undergone a spectacular transformation since 2010. While it has grown into a premier destination, it retains a bespoke, boutique feel that sets it apart from its larger neighbors. Often regarded by our guests as the highlight of their day, Helen & Joey Estate is a must-visit for anyone seeking the “10 out of 10” Yarra Valley experience.

The Evolution of the Estate

When Helen and Joey purchased the Gruyere property in late 2010, they were embarking on a new adventure. Originally founded in the early 1990s, the vineyard was initially intended to produce fruit for sale to larger commercial wineries.

Today, the estate spans 200 acres, with approximately 87 acres of meticulously tended vines. The original 1995 plantings—including Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Shiraz—continue to thrive, providing the foundation for their 100% estate-grown wines. Because they grow all their own fruit, the winemaking team has total control over the quality, resulting in wines that perfectly express the unique Gruyere terroir.

A Diverse & Innovative Wine Range

One of the main drawcards for our private winery tours is the sheer diversity of the Helen & Joey portfolio. The estate features four distinct tiers, each with its own personality:

  • Unicorn (Formerly Inara): Fresh, vibrant, and designed for casual enjoyment.
  • Layla: Approachable and expressive cool-climate varietals.
  • Alena: The premium tier, focusing on elegance, precision, and European-style structure.
  • Wayward Child: Our personal favorite! This range represents the winemaker’s experimental and “unrestrained” side. We highly recommend the Serendip Wayward Child, a unique and delicious Pinot-Shiraz blend.

For those looking for something edgy and new, don’t miss their Canned Wine Range. While unconventional, these have become a massive hit with our guests—particularly the Rosé—offering a high-quality, high-convenience way to enjoy estate-grown fruit.

Breathtaking Views & New Luxury

The wine is exceptional, but the setting is arguably even better. The cellar door features an expansive wine deck that offers some of the most “Instagrammable” views in the valley. As you relax with a tasting, you can look out over the lower Yarra Valley basin toward the Dandenong Ranges.

Re’em Yarra Valley: The estate recently entered a new chapter with the opening of Re’em. This $20 million development includes a One-Hat restaurant that serves a sophisticated fusion of Australian and Chinese cuisine, and a boutique hotel featuring 16 luxury lakeside suites. It has elevated the property into a world-class resort destination.

The Legend of the Unicorn

You’ll notice a recurring motif during your visit: the Unicorn. This mythical creature is the symbol of Helen & Joey, chosen because Helen was born in the Year of the Horse. She felt the property seemed “enchanted” when she first saw it under a thick layer of fog, and thus the unicorn was born as a symbol of determination and grace.

Keep an eye out for the unicorn statues dotted around the vines as you arrive—and don’t forget to look for “Septicorn,” the legendary guardian of the estate’s infrastructure!
