We are back for another round of top fives here in the world-famous Yarra Valley. At Big Grape Winery Tours, we have front-row access to the region’s most exceptional produce. Having completed thousands of individual tours since 2001, we’ve developed a deep understanding of what makes our guests—and their palates—tick.
Today, we are digging into the “holy grail” of cool-climate wine: Pinot Noir. While it found its fame in Burgundy, the Yarra Valley’s rich, iron-based soils and cool climate provide the perfect environment for this elegant, complex red. Pinot is a “heartbreak grape” for winemakers—stubborn and demanding—but when they get it right, the results are ethereal.
Here are our top five picks for the best Pinot Noir in the Valley right now.
1. Pimpernel Vineyards – Pinot Noir One
Pimpernel is the “secret leader” of the region, and the world is catching on. They produce four distinct Pinots per vintage (One through Four), but for us, Pinot Noir One remains the gold standard. It is the definition of elegance: light-framed, aromatic, and incredibly pure. While its sibling, the “Two,” is bolder and bigger, the “One” captures the savory, lithe finesse that makes Yarra Pinot world-class.
- Our Rating: 9.8/10
- Current RRP: Approx. $80.00

2. Helen’s Hill – First Light SCR Pinot Noir
Planted from cuttings sourced from the legendary Clos de Vougeot in Burgundy, this single-vineyard standout is steeped in heritage. The First Light SCR offers a deeper profile than most, bursting with dark strawberry and cherry, underpinned by a sophisticated hint of spice. It is a refined, structured wine that consistently punches well above its weight.

Our Rating: 8.5/10
Current RRP: Approx. $75.00
3. Steels Gate – Melba Block Pinot Noir
The Melba Block (situated at 150m above sea level) is a masterclass in hand-tended viticulture. This wine is all about power and finesse; expect vibrant red cherry and wild strawberry notes with the silky influence of aged French oak. The 2024 vintage, sourced from the early-1980s plantings, is aromatic and elegant—a true local favorite that often sells out shortly after release.

4. Stefani Estate – ‘The View’ Pinot Noir
There is a recurring theme of cherry in the best Pinots, and Stefani’s ‘The View’ takes it to a gourmet level. This organic Pinot is rich and filling, offering hints of sour cherry, Christmas pudding, and sweet cinnamon spice. It’s a bold, joyful expression of the grape that can easily be cellared for a decade—if you have the willpower to wait.

Current RRP: Approx. $65.00
5. Payten & Jones – VV Pinot Noir
The team at Payten & Jones are the modern legends of the Healesville scene—part “hipster,” part “grunge,” and entirely dedicated to great wine. Their VV (Valley Vignerons) Pinot is the most approachable, “drink-now” wine on this list. Fermented in stainless steel to preserve its raw, electric cherry brightness, it offers a textured, earthy energy that reflects the ironstone and mudstone soils of the valley.

Our Rating: 7.8/10
Current RRP: Approx. $32.00
In summary
Wine is a personal journey, and while these are our top picks, the best way to find your favorite is to taste them at the cellar door. Pinot Noir doesn’t judge, and neither do we—even after a long day of tasting! Use this list as your guide for your next private tour.
