Yarra Valley Spirits: The Four Pillars Gin Journey

Just under an hour from Melbourne’s bustling CBD lies the Yarra Valley—a region famous for its diversity. While it has long been Australia’s premier cool-climate wine destination, the last decade has seen a new star emerge. Four Pillars Gin has transformed the local landscape, proving that this “heartland of wine” has plenty of room for world-class spirits.

The Story Behind the Still

The Four Pillars story is a true local legend. In 2013, Healesville local Cameron Mackenzie began experimenting with a miniature copper still in the back of Rob Dolan Wines. Along with co-founders Stuart Gregor and Matt Jones, the team set out to craft a gin that captured the modern Australian spirit.

The distillery’s home at 2A Lilydale Road, Healesville, has a gritty history of its own. Once a run-down timber yard, the site was reimagined into the “gin paradise” it is today. In 2023, the brand reached a massive milestone when Lion moved to 100% ownership, yet the soul of the business remains firmly in the valley. A key part of their agreement ensures that the gin continues to be made right here in Healesville, keeping local jobs and production in the heart of the Yarra Valley.

Awards & Global Recognition

What started as a “dream in a shed” has become a global phenomenon. Four Pillars has achieved the extraordinary feat of being named International Gin Producer of the Year by the IWSC three times (2019, 2020, and 2023)—making them the first distillery in the world to do so. Their commitment to quality and innovation has turned many “wine-only” visitors into lifelong gin enthusiasts.

The Signature Gin Lineup

If you’re joining us for a tasting, here are the heavy hitters you’ll likely find on your paddle:

Navy Strength Gin: Don’t let the innocent label fool you. At 58.8% ABV, this gin is intense but remarkably smooth, featuring native finger limes and ginger. It’s a favorite for those who want their botanical flavors to really “punch through” in a cocktail. (Approx. $100)

Rare Dry Gin: The original black-label classic. Distilled with whole fresh oranges and native lemon myrtle, it’s a spicy yet Mediterranean-inspired gin that serves as the perfect base for a G&T. (Approx. $78)

Bloody Shiraz Gin: The “gateway gin” for wine lovers. Four Pillars is now the largest buyer of Shiraz grapes in the Yarra Valley, steeping the fruit in their Rare Dry Gin to create this cult favorite. It’s naturally sweet, incredibly purple, and a local icon. (Approx. $85)

The Distillery Experience

Following a massive $7 million expansion, the Healesville distillery is now a world-class hospitality hub. The venue can seat up to 300 guests across the stylish Beth’s Bar and the sun-drenched Jude’s Gin Garden.
While we are a wine tour company at heart, we love to “dabble” in the best the valley has to offer. A private tour means we go where you want to go. We’ve never seen a guest leave Four Pillars without a smile (and perhaps a bottle or two for their home bar). The service is excellent, the atmosphere is electric, and the gin? Well, the awards speak for themselves.

Would you like me to include a reserved tasting at Four Pillars as the “grand finale” to your next Big Grape private tour?
